Hello everybody! I am so so sorry for not having posted anything new. Things have been kind of strange and uncomfortable for me since the beginning of the year! It’s not easy having allergies showing up at my age!
Last August i had a severe reaction to an antibiotic. I had to go to the hospital for treatment. Luckily, i only stayed there for a few hours and we got back to out home. It was a laugh and cry situation. At 6 in the morning i was trying to breathe and our 2 year old was cheering : “we are going for a drive”! Anyway, i went to the doctor a few days later and he said it was an allergic reaction to the antibiotic. I got my antihistamines for a few days and all was good. The little guy was still breastfeeding!
But apparanently there was more! During holidays i started having a lot, a lot, a lot of itching and burning and redness almost all over my body. After a while rashes showed up. Big ones! Itching was unbearable at times. You know these iron brushes we use for cleaning the fireplace? I could use on of them! That happened almost every night for more than 7 weeks! Some days more, some days less. I started getting my antihistamines again. I noticed that it was more intense after certain foods, like citrus, tomato and spinach. Since i was on antihistamines i could not go to the doctor for having any tests. The rashes finally started getting less and less and i stopped the pills. The rashes came and left in a few hours.
Time to go see a specialist! I visited another doctor thist time I told him what is going on, showed him my last exams and he believes what i have is something called chronic urticaria (χρόνια κνίδωση στα ελληνικά). That’s when the cells that carry histamine in our body go a bit crazy and lose their temper easily. God knows what triggers that! Then rashes pop out! Some foods that contain histamine make the problem worse. Like spinach and citrus! They do not cause the reaction, they just help the itch be more annoying! I had that for more than 6 weeks, so it’s called chronic. We can not know if and when it will show up again. There is no cure for that. It’s not anything life threatening, thank God, but it’s annoying. A LOT! It’s just rashes and itchiness. No breathing or swelling problems, which can be dangerous. There are people constantly on antihistamines for their whole life! I hope it goes away and never shows up again. My dear, supportive husband said it’s just not these cells that got crazy, it’s the owner of the cells that’s a bit crazy and weird!
But, what seems strange to my doctor and he is trying to figure out is how come i have IgE antibodies skyrocketing and i have never ever had any allergy reactions so far. He does not believe the antibitiotic incident was allergic, because it occured a few hours after the last pill. Not 10 minutes after the first one. It was just bad timing, my exhaustion and perhaps those crazy histamine cells. In a few weeks i am taking a test for the antibiotic just to make that sure though. I did a few blood tests to see if i have any weird, rare disease that’s causing high IgE without me being allergic. The results will be out in a week. And if these come out negative we’ll check some more i guess! And we might never find anything!
If you have any info on chronic urticaria or you know someone who is having the same problem i’d love to hear from you! I hope you will excuse my 2 week absence.
