Hello my dears!!!!! How is life at your part of the world? Nothing exciting happening here! Just lots of political talk, which i really can not stand hearing for 5 minutes and not wanting to scream, cry or start laughing! Anyway…let’s move on to making milk plastic! Yeap, that’s right. Plastic made from milk! When i first read Sophia’s post about milk plastic it sounded really weird! That’s why i decided to give it a try!
It’s all about science really. Cow’s milk contains a protein caled casein. Vinegar helps separate this protein and make our own plastic! Here’s the recipe from Sophia’s post :
- 300ml milk
- 1 tablespoon vinegar
- a piece of thin fabric or tulle
- a plastic bowl and plastic wrap for the mold or a silicone mold if your prefer
I used 600ml of milk and 2 tablespoons of vinegar and got 100gr of casein plastic.
Here’s how to do it:
Poor milk into a pot and warm it up. We do not want it to boil. Once it is warm, poor vinegar into the milk and stir. After a while you should see white clumps form. Keep stirring for a while and turn heat off. Allow the pot to cool and strain the milk. Here’ s what we need the thin fabric for. I did not have that, so i used 3 pieces of tulle. After straining i got this small ball of casein. Be sure to remove as much milk as you can. I used all the strength that’s hidden in my muscles!
We are done with science. Let’s move to imagination. Shape your plastic or mold it to create a one of a kind plastic piece! I used a plastic bowl as a mold. Stand back, enjoy the masterpiece and let it dry. As it dries it will turn beige, yellow or something like that.
I let it dry for about 24 hours before painting it. I used black and silver spray paint for my new decorative bowl and placed it next to my sparkling glitter bowl!
I ‘ll create something from milk plastic again. It’s pretty easy! Have you ever tried this? Or will you?
